The Kentucky Theater Project

Mission:
Kentucky Theater Project (KTP) is a non-profit arts organization that is housed in the historic Kentucky Theater in Louisville, Kentucky.

Focus:
Recognizing that Louisville’s neighborhoods are rich in culture and that every culture possesses a unique form of expression, Kentucky Theater Project sets itself apart with its focus on local arts and cultural diversity. True to the neighborly ways of Louisville, performing, visual, and media artists and arts groups share the Kentucky Theater. They work both independently and cooperatively to conduct concerts, special events and classes, create recordings and films, and produce dance and theatrical productions. Kentucky Theater Project not only provides an accessible space where underserved groups can enjoy performing arts, but also provides opportunities for them to help plan, promote, perform, and staff shows.

Programs:

Kentucky Theater Project stands out with its focus on Kentucky’s home front, serious themes, accessibility, and youth.

The Youth and Education Initiative strengthens the capacity for self-expression by young people and identifies strategies that empower them. We do this by bringing youth and entertainment artists together for intensive, authentic experiences in audio production and filmmaking; utilizing arts integration strategies for training teachers on connecting the arts to curriculum; and enabling the arts to become a continuing part of the educational and community experiences of all children.

The Cultural Heritage Initiative celebrates the legacy of traditional storytellers and music makers and their musical instruments. Through programs in the initiative, we build bridges and bring diverse people and groups together to learn from one another and foster a greater understanding of how cultures and the beliefs of those cultures contribute to the arts in Kentucky and affect its social fabric.

The Independent Works Initiative provides community artists with opportunities to bring the excitement of creative grassroots productions to Louisville. Through this initiative we touch and affect hundreds of artists each year that otherwise would not experience the fulfillment of creative expression and audience development.

The Community Initiative broadens participation in the arts through free cultural events and allows people to meet artists through workshops, exhibits, auditions and film screenings, and arts festivals on Fourth Street.
