About the Art:
Present day Andean folk music is the product of centuries of cultural and ethnic intermixing. The arrival of the first Spaniards to the Andean highlands in the early 16th century signaled the end for the ancient Inca civilization and many facets of their culture. The Spanish sailed to the Americas to conquer the natives by converting them to Catholicism and introducing Spanish language and customs, including musical elements, rhythms, and instruments. They brought with them African slaves who also toted their traditions, rhythms, and instruments. Confronted with a repressive colonial system, the Andean highlander searched for new ways of expression through blending the vastly different Spanish, African, and Inca Cultures. Today the highland music of Ecuador, Bolivia, Peru, northeastern Chile and northwestern Argentina forms the backbone of Andean folk music and reflects the multiethnic and multicultural character of the region. The mainstay of Andean music is played through the haunting sounds of the indigenous panpipes and flutes. Combined with string and percussion instruments introduced by Spaniards and Africans, the music weaves together melodies that speak of ages gone by.
