Fernando Moya - Artist's Statement

Fernando is passionate about keeping the music of the Andes alive and educating others about the importance of preserving folk traditions. He believes his highest purpose is to provide others with a fresh perspective on the struggles of his people to conserve their culture and vision of the world.

Performing Artist
Fernando Moya is a master musician and crafter of indigenous South American wind instruments, who also performs expertly on string and percussion instruments that Andean highlanders transmuted from European and African instruments in the early 16th century. Fernando has performed on public stages, at festivals and prestigious arts venues in Ecuador and throughout the United States for more than 20 years. Among the stages of distinction that he has performed are Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center, and the World Music Institute.

Arts Educator
In addition to concert performances, Fernando has conducted lectures, workshops and demonstrations at countless universities and secondary and primary schools. His range as an arts educator includes performing concerts for school children; conducting lecture demonstrations and teaching master classes for university music students studying Andean instruments; and conducting panpipe making workshops for groups of students.

Cultural Artist in Residence
Fernando is the Cultural Artist in Residence for Kentucky Theater Project. In this capacity he conducts outreach programs and works with master folk musician John Gage to present bilingual programs that demonstrate through music and narration how we are all connected. Fernando is listed in the Kentucky Arts on Tour directory and available for booking statewide.
