GIRL EMPOWERMENT MATTERS

The arts can be a powerful tool for engaging and supporting girls as they move through adolescence. By giving voice to their thoughts, feelings, and experiences, girls become empowered to face their challenges and pursue their dreams.

Girl Empowerment Matters (GEM) helps girls better understand the complexities of their social and personal identities through the arts.

GEM is anchored in the findings of the pioneering research project authored by Annie Rogers and Carol Gilligan, titled Strengthening Healthy Resistance and Courage in Girls. Among the reports’ key findings are:

  • Various forms of the arts can play a role in girls’ healthy development.
  • The arts can function as a vehicle for building and sustaining girls’ voices as they move through adolescence.
  • Girls’ courage can be fostered through the arts when their knowledge of self is sustained in relationship with other people.
